Ready Set Go to Kindergarten

What is this Sales Tax Holiday?

Nicolle Bellmore Pierse - Wednesday, August 03, 2016
August is here which means it is almost time for everyone to go back to school! There are lots of great deals and steals on school supplies this time of year but if you really want to save, be sure to take advantage of this weekend’s Sales Tax Holiday.

What is this Sales Tax Holiday? From this Friday, August 5, 2016 to Sunday, August 7, 2016, several items will be exempt from sales and use tax! According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, those items include: “clothing priced at $75 per item or less, school supplies priced at $20 per item or less, and school instructional material priced at $20 per item or less”.

Whether you’re a proud parent of new kindergartener, an experienced preschooler, or a star teacher getting their classroom ready – this weekend is certainly the chance to get the most for your money!

For those who may not be shopping personally for back-to-school gear and items, please consider purchasing supplies that can be donated through a local Fill the Bus drive. Several locations throughout the county run wonderful drives to help those children who need it most. Check Elyria Schools’ site for  supply drives information. You can also contact United Way of Greater Lorain County to see how you can start your own drive or bring your supplies to their Campaign Kickoff on August 19 at Mike Bass Ford. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. they will be collecting school supplies that will be distributed to schools in our community through the Educational Service Center of Lorain County!

If you’d like more information on the holiday regulations and such, please visit the Ohio Department of Taxation’s.

Before you hit the stores this weekend, make sure you check your child’s school supply needs list at the Elyria School District website.

Happy shopping!
