Ready Set Go to Kindergarten

The Importance of Washing Hands Experiment

Nicolle Bellmore Pierse - Friday, January 29, 2021

Hands On As We Grow is an awesome resource for parents looking for activities to do with their children. Last November they posted a community member feature including this awesome experiment! It can be difficult to help little kids understand why we ask them to wash their hands. But if we take the time to explain why, they'll be more likely to do what we ask without any argument. So let's take a look at this experiment and how it can help you explain the importance of hand washing to your child!

Materials:

  • Water
  • Pepper
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Transparent bowl (glass would work well)
  • A white sheet of paper
  • A marker

How to do the experiment:

  • Start by tracing your child's hand onto the piece of paper.
  • Place the paper under the transparent bowl.
  • Fill the bowl with water and add some pepper on top.
  • Have your child dip their finger into the liquid dish soap.
  • When they touch the water, you'll notice all the pepper move away to reveal the clean hand below!

You can use this observation to start a conversation about why we wash our hands. Try relating the flakes of pepper to germs or dirt!
