The Importance of Storytimes

Elyria Public Library System will be starting their winter storytimes on January 15, 2018.  Storytimes are fun for children, and can be a great opportunity for caregivers to talk with parents of similar aged children.  But storytimes also offer so much more.

Storytimes are a great way for children to gain early literacy skills.  Early literacy is not teaching a child to read, but rather gives the child the skills and knowledge they need to learn to read.  This includes understanding that print letters have sounds that can create words, understanding that smaller sounds make up words, and that words are written from left to right.  Additionally, hearing stories read encourage children to be creative in telling, writing, or acting out their own stories.  Children build up their vocabulary and discover an interest in books and realize that reading is fun.

Librarians are trained to find high quality books, songs, fingerplays, puppets and other props and to use these in fun and engaging way.  Parents can do their part by trying some of their children’s favorite parts of storytime at home.  Parents can find new favorite books to read to their children, sing new songs together, and encourage children’s storytelling by asking the child questions during play.
